The Viktos & ArmorSHIFT system is different because it provides a strong middle ground, resulting in a setup that is cheaper and lighter than a plate carrier, more versatile than a traditional bulletproof vest, and with some level of ballistic protection.

About the ArmorSHIFT and Viktos Chest Rigs Available from Premier Body Armor

Viktos is known for designing clothes and accessories for tactical situations.

We have worked closely with them to create bulletproof insert options for each of their backpacks, available on our Viktos bundles page. When Viktos was working to develop the best chest rig, they asked us to come up with a way to incorporate some bulletproof protection.

We achieved this by creating an entirely new bulletproof panel system, ArmorSHIFT. The panel can quickly switch between a full-size panel and a compact component of the Viktos Taculus or Low Key.

The ArmorSHIFT panel allows you versatility, using your rig as a plate carrier chest rig, or as a standalone piece of gear.

For more information regarding the development of the ArmorSHIFT panel, you can read the Armor SHIFT announcement page.

    What is a Chest Rig?

A chest rig is a lightweight, typically non-protective garment/harness used to carry tactical field equipment. That means the advantage lies in what it doesn't have.

A lot of rigs are optimized for weight and comfort. Others may have a lot more options for organization/storage.

Remember, operation dictates preparation. There are certain situations where it makes more sense for people to use a chest rig over a vest or plate carrier. Typically, they are used in non-combat situations by medical personnel or radio operators.

They are also useful for warm climates, shooting prone, or in-vehicle use. You should think of chest rigs as a replacement for no gear, rather than as a replacement for a bulletproof vest.

How to Maintain Your Chest Rig

Chest rigs are likely to be taken on and off more frequently than a vest or plate carrier. Because of this, some are more likely to experience wear and tear.

Can I wash a chest rig? Yes, washing can extend its lifespan. Here's how to best clean a chest rig:

First off, check the tag. There may be special instructions. Most of the time, you can use the washing machine on a gentle setting, but you shouldn't put it in the dryer.

Before washing, remove any bulletproof components. After washing, lay it flat to air dry. For a more detailed guide on how to keep your armor clean, check out our article on how to clean your body armor

How Should Your Chest Rig Fit?

Designed to distribute the weight of your gear and balance it between your shoulders, back, and torso, here's how to fit a chest rig:

First, how high should a chest rig fit? The top of the rig itself should align with the mid-chest. You should also make sure that the fit isn’t adjusted to a height that makes it uncomfortable to grab your gear. This is especially true if you are storing extra magazines.

Once it's at the proper height, adjust the side straps so that the rig sits snugly and evenly against your chest without being too tight. The goal is to distribute the weight across your torso. It should be secure enough to stay in place during movements, but not so tight that it restricts your breathing or movement.

Choosing the Chest Rig That’s Right for You

The best tactical chest rig is going to be one that can store all the things you need. This should be your primary focus. Take inventory of all your gear and accessories.

Perhaps you need something cheap and lightweight, like the Viktos Low Key. This will be the best chest rig plate carrier combo. Or, maybe you need a more modular setup with MOLLE webbing, like the Viktos Taculus MX.

Here are some things to look for in a chest rig:

    • Magnetic components
    • Carbon fiber reinforcement
    • Water resistance
    • Quiet pull zippers
    • Adjustable shoulder straps

All of these are good indicators for reliable build quality. When in doubt, opt for a more modular design that will give you more freedom to carry what you want.

Why Purchase Your Chest Rig from Premier Body Armor?

Even the best chest rigs are typically not going to offer bulletproof protection. A tactical chest rig from Viktos alongside an ArmorSHIFT panel is more versatile. It can be used in the same way as any other chest rig, but the option of bulletproof coverage is always there.

With Viktos ArmorSHIFT chest rigs, you're not just getting a piece of equipment – you're getting the freedom that comes from having more options. Designed for versatility and built to last, these chest rigs offer a unique blend of functionality and protection, making them the ultimate choice for a wide range of tactical scenarios.
