UHMWPE AR/AK Protection for Daily Carry

Get practical rifle protection that rides quietly in your bag. Sized for the vast majority of backpacks and bag manufacturers who build for 15" laptops, this 10"x15" UHMWPE insert is thinner and lighter than our previous model, built for everyday carry when AR/AK threats are your concern, without adding bulk.

Designed specifically to stop common AR/AK-type rifle threats, including 5.56×45 M193 and 7.62×39 MSC, this plate gives practical, affordable protection for families, teachers, travelers, and commuters. Because it is built to stop select rifle threats, it also protects against many common handgun and shotgun threats. It slips into a laptop pocket and stays out of the way until you need it.

It’s a purpose-built special-threat solution: slim profile, low weight, and multi-hit capable, tuned for practicality.

QUICK INFO
  • What it is: A 10"x15" rifle-rated backpack armor insert that fits standard bookbags (like the Vertx Ready Pack).
  • What it stops: Special-threat tuned around the most common rifle threats: 5.56×45 M193 and 7.62×39 MSC, with protection against many common handgun and shotgun threats.
  • What it doesn’t: Not designed for M855/SS109 or 7.62×51 M80 Ball.

Special Threat Note

This plate is tuned for the rifle calibers most commonly encountered in criminal shootings where a rifle is used. According to NIJ’s Criminal Justice Testing and Evaluation Consortium survey, 5.56mm / .223 accounted for 39.3% of rifles in criminal use, and 7.62×39mm for 30.3%. Combined, these two calibers represent nearly 70% of the most common rifle threats. This plate was engineered specifically with those AR- and AK-type rounds in mind. *Please note: this plate is not designed for use against M855.

Key Features 10x15 Special Threat Backpack Insert:

Rating & Testing

TESTED ROUNDS

Round Velocity (ft/s)
7.62×39 Lead Core Ball ~2,400 ft/s
5.56×45 M193 ~3,250 ft/s

To learn more about the NIJ body armor standards, read our Understanding Body Armor Ratings article.

* This plate is not NIJ certified. It was purpose-built as a Special Threat plate and falls outside the NIJ standards for certification. It has not been tested against the NIJ RF1 M80 Ball requirement, which is part of the full RF1 standard. Instead, this plate is optimized to defeat the AR- and AK-type rounds most often encountered in violent crimes and school shootings, offering a thinner and lighter option than a full RF1 plate.

OFFICIAL TEST REPORT

Want to see the full test report? Download the test document below:

*Note: In the penetration column, "P" stands for partial penetration, meaning the bullet was captured by the armor and did not fully pass through. This is a successful result. A failure would be marked as "C" or "CP" for complete penetration, indicating the bullet fully passed through the armor.

Ballistic Test Results for the Special Threat Rifle-Rated Backpack Plate

Why UHMWPE Makes the Best Rifle-Rated Backpack Armor

Most people look for a Kevlar backpack insert, without realizing that the best rifle-rated backpack armor isn't Kevlar at all. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is the material for rifle-rated protection in a backpack format. When comparing hard armor vs. soft armor, pound for pound UHMWPE is one of the strongest ballistic materials available, and it’s a fraction of the weight and thickness of ceramic or steel.

Size and weight matter in a backpack more than almost anywhere else. After all, you're carrying this every day on school trips, work commutes, or even flights. At 3.4 lbs and just 16mm thick, this UHMWPE armor insert fits the laptop pocket of a standard bookbag and disappears into your daily carry. Comparable ceramic plates are heavier and can crack from drops and impacts. Steel is even heavier and far bulkier.

UHMWPE gives this insert a strong balance of multi-hit rifle-rated protection, low weight, slim profile, and everyday durability, which is why it works well for backpack armor.

Everyday Carry Applications: Who Benefits Most

Rifle-rated backpack armor isn't just for law enforcement or tactical professionals. It is for anyone who already carries a backpack and wants practical protection without changing their routine.

  • Students and families: Student backpack armor gives families a way to add rifle-rated protection to a standard school bag without making the backpack look tactical or adding unnecessary bulk.
  • Commuters: For daily drives, public transit, parking garages, and walks between work and home, commuter protection works best when it is already in the bag you carry every day.
  • Travelers: This insert gives you travel safety armor that fits discreetly inside a laptop compartment, making it useful for airports, hotels, road trips, and unfamiliar cities.
  • Office EDC: For professionals who carry a backpack to work, meetings, or client visits, this insert adds a low-profile layer of protection without changing the look of your everyday carry setup.

Multi-Hit Capability and Real-World Performance

Multi-hit performance matters because real-world rifle threats can involve more than one round. This insert is engineered to withstand repeated impacts from its tested threat rounds, giving you practical protection in a format you can carry every day.

This rifle-rated backpack armor is engineered to be multi-hit armor, meaning it's designed to absorb repeated impacts from 5.56×45 M193 and 7.62×39 Lead Core Ball without catastrophic failure. The UHMWPE composite construction distributes impact energy across the panel rather than concentrating it at a single point, which is why it outperforms both steel and ceramic in repeated strikes at this weight and thickness.

Real-world performance also means reliability outside the lab. The waterproof polyurea outer layer helps protect the panel from moisture, sweat, and daily wear. For best long-term performance, avoid prolonged storage in extreme heat.

Backpack Fitment and Daily Carry Comfort

The most capable backpack armor insert is worthless if it doesn't fit your bag or is so heavy or bulky that you leave it behind. This 10x15 armor panel is sized specifically for the laptop compartment of standard bookbags and commuter packs built around a 15" laptop sleeve. The tapered top profile keeps it seated high and stable against your back panel rather than shifting around at the bottom of the main compartment.

At 16mm thick and 3.4 lbs, these armor plates for backpacks feel more like a heavy laptop than a piece of ballistic equipment, and most people forget it's there after the first week.

If you're building out a more complete loadout alongside your bag, take a look at the STAR Plate Carrier package for rifle-rated vest protection that pairs well with your everyday carry setup.

Protection That Goes Where You Go

You don't get to choose when or where a threat happens. What you can choose is whether you're prepared when it does. The 10x15 Special Threat Rifle-Rated Backpack Insert is designed for real-world use, slim enough to forget, and capable enough to make a real difference. Add the 10x15 Special Threat Insert to your cart and carry confidence wherever you go.

FAQs on the Special Threat Backpack Insert

Will this stop 5.56 and 7.62×39?

Yes, this insert is special-threat tuned for 5.56×45 M193 and 7.62×39, the two most common rifle calibers in criminal use. It’s multi-hit capable and designed for real-world carry.

Does it stop M855 “green tip” or M80 Ball?

No. This model is not designed for M855/SS109, and it does not claim performance against 7.62×51 M80 Ball. If M80 coverage is a priority, consider our Universal Fit Level III+ insert.

Will it fit my backpack?

The 10"x15" flat, tapered-top profile is sized for most standard bookbags, like the Vertx Ready Pack. If your bag has a 15" laptop compartment, this insert will likely fit. For best results, measure your compartment and compare it to the 10" x 15" tapered profile before ordering.

Is it NIJ certified?

No. It’s not NIJ-certified because it’s a special-threat plate optimized for specific AR/AK rounds to keep weight and thickness down.

How should I position it in the bag?

Place it in the laptop pocket with the tapered top upward so it sits high and stable against your back panel for comfort.

Care & storage tips?

Wipe clean with a damp cloth; avoid harsh solvents. Do not leave in a hot trunk for prolonged periods, as extreme heat can degrade materials over time.

Can I fly with it?

Yes, it's TSA-approved. Body armor is generally allowed in carry-on and checked bags by TSA, but final approval rests with TSA officers. Always check airline policies and local laws before travel.

This is the one you are looking for.

We really need to think in terms of active vs. passive protection. In a real bullets-flying situation, PASSIVE protection means you can actually move, react, and cover your vitals quickly AND DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE FLYING BULLETS.

But there’s another layer: ACTIVE protection that doesn’t scream “I’m prepared” to everyone around you.

Hundreds of dollars on a full tactical backpack might give great protection, but it also paints a giant target on your back—everyone notices the MOLLE, the bulk, the “operator” vibe. That defeats the purpose in most everyday scenarios.

Even the best gear is useless if it’s too heavy to carry every day, or if you only bring it on “prepared” days. Eventually you’ll find every excuse not to carry it, and the protection becomes meaningless.
That’s exactly why finding the balance between everyday life and preparedness is so critical—and this insert is the perfect product for exactly that.

I bought the 10x15 Special Threat Rifle-Rated Backpack Insert on Amazon and slid it into a plain, cheap Amazon backpack everyone owns. No one looks twice. I carry it like I’m just heading out for lunch—light, normal, zero attention drawn. Yet inside is legit rifle-grade protection.

I was braced for it to be super heavy… but it’s honestly light. Way lighter than I expected for something rated against rifle threats. That alone was a huge relief. Just a weight of a light notebook.

It fits the laptop sleeve perfectly—zero bulging, zero weird shape. From the outside it’s 100% a regular everyday bag.

It’s not a giant medieval shield, but in a real emergency it’s one of the smartest, fastest active-protection tools you can have: grab the bag, cover head and chest, protect yourself and your family. I keep it on the passenger seat in the car—if something happens, I snatch it and I’m already shielded without digging through gear.

Sure, if someone’s hunting me with an elephant-gun sniper round, I’ll just have to accept my fate. But against the threats most of us can realistically prepare for in everyday scenarios? This hits the sweet spot between normal daily carry and genuine protection better than anything else I’ve found.

For anyone new to this or just naturally anxious: this is real capability without turning daily life into a tacticool fashion show. Low-profile, easy to carry every single day, effective when it counts. You don’t need to look the part; you just need to be able to act when it matters.

This insert nails that balance perfectly. Highly recommend—especially if you want protection that stays invisible until you need it. Peace of mind you can actually live with.

Perfect Fit for my Go-Bag!

I love my GoRuck GR3 which has a laptop slot that perfectly fits this bad boy. Knowing I can throw this on to protect me or my family is a massive relief. At 4lbs, you barely feel the difference in the bag. I am recommending this plate to all my friends, family, and coworkers. Thanks Premier!!

Nice High Quality Plate!

The Stratis Level III+ plate is a high quality, lightweight plate for the threat level protection that it affords. It fits into my backpack very nicely! It gives me the additional piece of mind over a level IIIA panel, when necessary. But, actually, I have a nice IIIA panel from PBA, as well. Sometimes, I exchange the plate for the panel, or vice versa. Sometimes, I have both in my pack. It depends on where I’m going, of course, and what kind of environment, I’ll be in. I’m in a large urban area most of the time. Of course, I don’t expect a level III+ and IIIA, together, to be a substitute for a level IV plate, but, I have the plate and panel, anyway, so often just carry them both.

Piece of Mind in knowing it's there

I couldn't be happier with this plate. I spent a lot of time looking for something that was level III+ and lightweight enough to carry, when loaded down with everything else and this plate did the job.
Excellent Quality and I honestly hope I never have to use it, but glad that I have it.

Lightweight, slim and added ballistic protection.

Fits perfectly in my VTAC/Vertx Pistol Scabbard. To help keep it in place I added a ITW ToasterLoc and shock cord. With this insert I can still fit thin/slim items in the cargo pocket.

The insert’s weight allows the Scabbard to be held using one hand for prolonged periods of time if need be and sits in the front passenger seat in my patrol vehicle.

I like the insert’s size and thickness as it can easily be swapped in a backpack or used with the Scabbard which is essentially a downsized day pack capacity-wise.

The insert’s size and weight make it ideal when pairing in either a backpack or similar accessory.

Keeping my little one safe

I’ve been a customer for quite a while… all the way back to our first diaper bag and a IIIa soft insert. Our seven year old is off to his first camps this summer and we want him to have the tools and training to stay safe. My own backpack insert brought me peace of mind when I was able to cover my child during a drive by shooting in my community a few years ago. Thank you, Premier Body Armor, for creating a product that is light enough and perfectly sized for a seven year old’s backpack. I will rest easier knowing he has some means to shield himself.

Quality is very noticeable!

5 stars just by looking at it. Very well quality made product. I didn't test it obviously, but reviews online are great. It's definitely thicker than I anticipated, but for a non-steel plate that stops multiple rounds of rifle ammo--it is to be expected. Taller than I thought, but make sure you measure the backpack you plan to put it in. Overall, seems to be a great product for what it was designed for. Also, not very heavy either, so it won't bog down your bag.

Would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

We purchased the Level III+ panel for our son, who is in elementary school. Our son keeps it in his desk because the students hang their backpacks outside the classroom. I showed him how/where to hold it if he ever needed it. This panel was more expensive than other panels, but I chose it because it has the rifle rating. More importantly, my son’s life is worth more than $400, so it’s worth it. If I had one suggestion, it would be a little bigger- even an extra inch or two in length/width, but I know it’s meant to fit inside a backpack.

Now I can breather easier again

After the Sandy Hook shooting I bought both my kids level III backpack inserts. More than a decade later my son is teaching at a university and doing consulting at high schools and I realized he needed something that would protect against rifle shootings. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he still had that insert from high school in his messenger bag, but he agreed that something to protect against rifle shootings would be good to have. We were happy to find the 10x15 Special Threat Rifle-Rated Backpack insert, which is not impossibly heavy and fits his bag well. These are troubling times, but it is good to feel that you have been at least a bit proactive at protecting against the craziness that is in the world.

Indispensable Peace of Mind

I bought 3 of these for each of my daughters' backpacks at school. Heaven forbid they are ever actually needed, I don't doubt that these plates will succeed in protecting my kids. They fit perfectly in the 15.6" laptop slot of their backpacks and to conceal the plates, I disguised them in laptop sleeves. It's a small price to pay for piece of mind while sending my kids to school... Now to get them bleed kits and training.

Harsh reality

I’m a mom of two small boys, my oldest will start school this August, with the harsh reality we live in I was full of emotions and especially anxiety. The thought of school shootings and how I would explain them to my 5 yo kept me up at night. I was actually searching on how to explain and train a 5 yo if this horrible situation were to happen. Someone told me about backpack inserts. After searching many inserts and asking my gun trained brother in law to point me in the right direction, my husband and I decided on Premier. It’s horrible at this day and age we have to purchase armor but when it arrived, saw and felt the quality and strength, I cannot explain the feeling of relief I felt. I trust this product to assist me and my son in enjoying this new life chapter.

Backpack insert

I bought this to put in my son’s backpack. It fit perfectly and only adds 3lbs to it. It’s awful the world we live in has come to this but it gives him protection if he ever needs it.

I hate that I needed to buy this for my child's backpack, but glad it exists

We purchased the Universal Fit Level III+ Rifle-Rated Backpack Insert for my child's backpack. I hate that I had to do that, but I am so relieved that something like this exists and is lightweight enough to make it viable for the intended purpose. Fits perfectly and I sincerely hope that we never have to use it.
